Christmas break

To encourage myself to keep drawing over Christmas break I am going to do a set of character designs similar to the ones below (eg. hero, villain, etc.), but to a new story idea I thought up. Drawing for class is all well and good, but I should be doing a lot more drawing just for the heck of it :)
This is just a first sketch, more to come.

Ragnar emulation

Another emulation assignment. I'd never heard of Ragnar before my teacher showed us one of his books in class. Man, he has such a cool style! Lots of crisp lines and awesome colors.

Misc. stuff

3 old assignments from Character Design class. I wasn't as satisfied with the results of these, but the learning process was very valuable. In all three of these I stepped into areas I was less artistically skilled at. For example, men, men are hard to draw! So I specifically drew two male characters, and like I said before I learned a lot in the process. I had to look up a lot of reference for how other artists draw their men.
These first 2 are a hero/villain combo. One big struggle was trying to incorporate a story and some character history into each design.

This was the result of an assignment where we were specifically suppose to draw something we were bad at. For me that meant evil fantasy character (in armor, I've never drawn a suit of armor in my life!). One big critique was to make everything more sharp and pointy. I tend to draw even evil things very round.

Michel Gagne Emulation

Inspired from Gagne's "Insanely Twisted Rabbits" and "Frenzied Fauna from A to Z." This was definitely a step out of my artistic comfort zone, but very fun to work on none the less.

Rigging!

I've been working on this 3D character all semester it's about time I show some progress, eh?
She's a cowgirl, I built her from scratch in Maya :) I'm rather fond of her long braid
Here are her animation controls. In the next week or so I will be doing an animation with her.
Here's her skeleton (Oooo rainbow colored), including a long chain of joints to control her braid

Quadraped!

First off, I DID NOT CREATE THIS CHARACTER. I just did the animating. The rig was downloaded from here: http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/character-rigs/c/koko

This was a simple walk cycle animation I did for my 3D character animation class. I'd never attempted to animate something with 4 legs, so that was a bit of a challenge. It's not perfect, but there you go.

Some little Halloween themed characters for my character design class :)

Desert Tree Spirit

In my chracter design class we had an assignment to create a character and incorporate either clouds, rocks or trees into their design. Luckily I was down in southern Utah this weekend and surrounded by BEAUTIFUL nature! You'd be surprised by the fascinating shapes you can find in the dry, twisted, desert trees and shrubs.

Alight!

Alight from Jason Keyser on Vimeo.

This is a student film I helped animate this last semester and a half. I mostly did character animation on the fire boy, but also lots of effects clean-up and inbetweening.
I'm so happy to see this done! Everyone put so much hard work into it. Here's the link shown at the end of the film, check out everyone's stuff: http://www.keyserhouse.com/alight

A comic!

In my Graphic Novel Appreciation class our final project was to make a beta comic, meaning a rough draft of a comic. I decided to give a story to the western girl I designed a while ago. Obviously this comic is very rough, no backgrounds, shading, or textures...yet. I have more ideas for this story so I will probably clean this version up someday and add another chapter to it, we shall see.

THOR!

This ain't fancy, it was just quick and fun
The God of Thunder! I saw the Thor movie recently and it was pretty rad, this is a much more old-school Thor look.

The Magic Flute

These designs were done as a favor to a friend who is in charge of this charity event called the Princess Festival. This year one part of the festival will include a kid's version of The Magic Flute. Since people are less familiar with it than the normal Disney fairy tales my friend asked if I could do some slightly Disneyfied characterizations to help the actors. It was a fun challenge.

Giddy up!

Recently I've been really getting into western movies, especially Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. I did this character design just for fun, have I mentioned how nice it is to just draw something for fun?

We will we will rock you!

Haven't posted anything for a while. I'm taking a few spring semester classes, one of which is a 2D Animation class taught by the amazing Cynthia Hogan. First assignment was to animate a character lifting a rock. It had to be animated on paper, oh man, I was very out of practice with that old technology. Next assignment I can use Flash again (a lovely computer program for 2D animating). Obviously this is very rough, I may go back and fix some parts

Dooom!!

I decided to give you all a little Invader Zim for fanart friday. I have to admit I don't like the show that much, but I do love the character designs. They are so stylized and unique. Oh, and the voice actors are pretty awesome too, especially Gir's (the little robot).

Jack and the Beanstalk

Here's a lengthy post for you. The semester is over and I finally finished all my work for my concept design class. The entire semester has been devoted to Jack and the Beanstalk stuff and I feel like I've learned a LOT. But quite frankly, I've had enough, I'm done, and I'm happy. So without further ado, here's my work

Jack's gear
the magic beans
Giant's table and chair

Talking gorilla

My final project for a 3D animation class. The audio is from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I lost more sleep over this project than I should have, and I'm still not completely happy with it. But a lot of things about it worked well

the attic room

I've never been good at making environments, so I am very proud of this piece! It's Jack's bedroom, made for my concept design class. Random bit of info, while designing this I kept imagining that the rug on the floor was a polar bear pelt. It worked in my head, then I realized how incongruous it would be to the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Oh well.

Older stuff

These were just some old images I found on the computer. I thought I'd share, because everyone could use a few more space fish, cows, and jack-a-lopes in their day :)
